Our Vision for Integrated Research

To conduct patient-directed research that elucidates the molecular mechanisms driving disease pathology and symptoms through continuous scientific exchange between clinicians and scientists, followed by meaningful collaborations with biopharma partners.

The nVision Journey

How It All Began

The research journey at Narayana Nethralaya began with a simple idea: using patient insights to drive scientific progress. Its large patient base provided rich clinical data to inform early diagnosis, prevention, and the development of innovative therapies—laying the foundation for the Narayana Netralaya Foundation's research ecosystem.

Building The First Research Team

The Narayana Netralaya Foundation established its first basic research team to bridge laboratory science with clinical care. The team focused on patient-directed research, using real clinical data to drive their scientific inquiries. Their goal was to enhance early diagnosis, improve prevention, and develop more effective therapies, ensuring that research was always grounded in clinical relevance.

The Creation of GROW

GROW (Genes, Repair and Regeneration in Ophthalmic Workstation) was established to bridge laboratory research and clinical application. It focuses on understanding the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying eye diseases, using in vitro and in vivo preclinical models. The lab also develops gene and stem cell therapy platforms while identifying biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets.

Growth of Preclinical and Translational Research

As research progressed, clinical data informed new lines of enquiry. Laboratory findings were validated using patient datasets, strengthening the preclinical foundation for future clinical translation. This cyclical approach established a robust model of patient-informed research.

The Rise of IBMS

Alongside GROW, the IBMS (Imaging, Biomechanics and Mathematical Modelling Solutions) lab expanded the research ecosystem. It investigates structural and functional changes in ocular tissues using advanced imaging technologies and image-processing algorithms. Its work spans both anterior and posterior segments of the eye, employing tools such as ultra-widefield fundus imaging, adaptive optics, and dynamic vascular imaging.

Where We Stand Today

Today, GROW and IBMS have positioned Narayana Nethralaya as a centre for patient-driven research, clinical collaboration, and technological innovation—advancing diagnostics, therapeutic development, and future clinical translation
