Ocular Genetics at the GROW Lab focuses on understanding the genetic basis of corneal and retinal disorders, with a particular emphasis on conditions prevalent in South Asian populations. Using high-throughput sequencing and advanced genetic analysis, the programme aims to uncover disease-causing variants and link them to clinical presentation and outcomes.
The research integrates genomic data with detailed phenotyping to support accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and downstream therapeutic development.
Genetic diagnosis enables early intervention, counselling, and targeted therapies.
The Ocular Genetics programme aims to:
The ocular genetics programme focuses on identifying and interpreting the genetic basis of inherited and complex eye diseases.
Core areas of focus include:
Additional focus areas include:
Together, these efforts support a diverse portfolio of Ocular Genetics research, spanning various areas Clinical geneticists, molecular biologists, and ophthalmologists
The Ocular Genetics programme is led by a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinician researchers with expertise in:
Close collaboration between laboratory researchers and clinicians ensures that research priorities remain aligned with patient needs and real-world clinical applicability
Since its inception in 2014, the Gen-Eye clinic at Narayana Netralaya has acted as a pivotal liaison between patients, clinicians, and laboratories, leveraging over a decade of clinical and genetic data to advance the understanding of ocular genetic disorders within the Indian ethnicity.
By maintaining an extensive database of family histories and causative variants, the clinic facilitates precise phenotype-genotype correlations—particularly concerning Inherited Retinal Disorders (IRDs), consanguinity, and phenotypic heterogeneity as highlighted in the Gopinath C et al. (2023) report.
This expertise enables the delivery of evidence-based pre- and post-test genetic counselling, empowering families to make informed choices regarding genetic testing and lifestyle adaptations while offering essential emotional, psycho-social, and socio-economic support to bridge the gap between diagnostic research and holistic patient care.
